Blue Smoke welcomes you to ‘The Sunday Sit Down Get Down’ our very own folk club event. We present local luminaries and national touring artist of the finest calibre, this is a first rate opportunity to catch a matinee concert with family and friends.
Our doors open at 3pm and the music always starts at 4pm so make sure you come early to get settled in.
There is a suggested ‘Koha’ entry for this event, we encourage you to support the musicians and pay what you can afford. Some artists have chosen to offer a pre-sale ticket option as space may be limited at their concert.

He’s been called “the best New Zealand songwriter you’ve never heard of” and has shared the stage with the likes of The Eastern, Bill Morris, The Tattle Tale Saints, Luckless and Violet French. Local Musician Daniel Madill returns to Blue Smoke on Sunday the 22nd October with a new band in tow: Glenn Teasdale (Bass) and Dan Callahan on (Drums) of Candi and the Rockets fame.
Come on down to the bluest of smokes for a big sounding psych-folk, blues mash as Madill mines his back catalogue and performs tracks from his new EP, Bake a Snake. You will also be treated to sets by the very talented singer/songwriters, Candice Milner and Tom Maxwell.
Daniel Madill creates garage folk songs for the modern fears: days spent at tills and the swapping of bills. Howlin’ Wolf, Arthur Lee and Gene Clarke are his holy trinity. It’s a big sounding psych, folk, bluesmash.
Madill hails from the colonial decay that is Dunedin, New Zealand. A city Keith Richards hates so much he took the time to mention it in his autobiography. It’s also the city where, on a diet of marmite toast and gumboot tea, Madill chiselled out his sound on a guitar his uncle made and his father once played. In 2014 a rusty people mover took him up the road to the shaky suburbs of Christchurch, where he’s continued to spread his anti-folk vision.
Madill has played shows from one end of the long white cloud to the other: bars, libraries, churches, town halls, truck trailers and a gondola.
Early 2015 saw the release of Madill’s first EP, Diatom. Just vocals and guitar laid down on an old Tascam four track; a little nod to eighties and nineties low-fi. He is no luddite but simplicity is his key. The EP got a bit of an airing around the place, here’s what someone else had to say about it:

In July 2017, the Bake a Snake EP spiralled from Madill’s mental wilderness. Although the production was very much in keeping with the first EP, the use of electric guitar on Bake a Snake gave the music a much heavier sound.
A similar ascetic shift can be seen in his recent live performances, with the addition of a backing band. Madill is now moving away from fuzzy headed solo sets and into the arms of a bigger and ultimately more frantic musical atmosphere.
