Following on from the 7 years of constant touring that fuelled the EP ‘Traveller, Monty’s first 2 years as a father have defied him to delve deeply into what slowing down might uncover.

Embracing change, reinventing life, and connecting to the source are themes that drive Monty’s full-length debut, out this spring. With his world challenged and capacities stretched, Bevins goes about digging riches of a reflective and humbled kind, building an arc, across 10 tracks, of a moving journey into fatherhood.

“It feels effortless yet it has the weight of much care and craft” Jess Shanks (The Eastern)

Monty Bevins is a New Zealand based singer-songwriter known as a touching, spirited performer, whose soul-folk songs ask the big questions while telling the small stories. With a warm rich voice and articulate guitar grooves, Monty digs out and distills themes of tenderness, personal revolution and adventure.

An artistic gem is what I’d call Monty. Heart, soul and pure elbow grease are what go into making his song writing so special, the audience feels as though they are settling in with an old friend. – Sally Shanks, Gisborne’s ‘Dome Cinema’ Proprietor

PLEASE NOTE: This will be a seated show, all covid level restriction will apply. To reserve a table email

In times like these a month can be a year, a year a month and a day a lifetime. All of us straddling a line between hope and doubt. Way back in April, “National Treasures” (RNZ) The Eastern were feeling relieved and as at ease as a bunch of no-hit musicians could ever feel. The continuing Covid blitz that had waylaid the lives and incomes of travelling musicians, crews and venues all around the world had managed only to nibble at the heels of this shore. We had prevailed.

With this in mind a collective decision was made by the band to reach out to brothers and sisters overseas, with some solidarity and some money to help the wheels turn. It was conceived, agreed and believed that The Eastern could throw a small drop in someone else’s bucket.

Here there were gigs on the calendar, a functioning country and an air of the above-mentioned relief. Thus shoulders could be shifted in the direction of need and so the band picked a venue in Ireland dear to their hearts and raised over three thousand dollars for the great DeBarras pub in Clonakilty Co. Cork. They played a bunch of Pogues songs, mopped the floors with their swaying and baying and paypaled the money across the water. Job done.

But then here at home a few months later the wolves start howling and the doors were locked down once more. The band prevailed again but noticed that one of their favourite local venues, The Common Room in Hastings was shaky and due to the vicissitudes of trying to run a goddamn people friendly pub in an un-people friendly virus haunted spring, were now looking at that forever lockdown.

A quick chat with Common Room governor Gerrard Barron and a glimpse at their give a little page convinced The Eastern they could duke up and sing for some dollars, in the same service focused manner all their Christchurch performances project.

So, its roll the sleeves, book the venue, get the tickets up and hope they can pull together a hooley (of the sit-down kind if in level 2) in just two weeks, in order to help their friends and comrades in the Hawkes Bay.

“We trade music for ticket money, we donate the ticket money which gets turned into love, which keeps the doors open, which keeps the music humming and the bar staff tipped and ready” – Says Eastern front man Adam McGrath.

An easy pop up gig for a band that has cemented themselves into hearts and minds nationwide.

The shows will be ready, rowdy and willin’ at their home base of Blue Smoke in Woolston on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th of October. Two nights ready for any level eventuality. New songs, hope songs, hearts songs, fight songs, drinking and crying songs will all be on the program. They’ll play favourites and more, all in trade, all in service to the spirit of The Common Room, solidarity and to the idea that music needs people and people need places and we need to protect the best of them when the road gets rocky.

If you can’t make it to either show you can still support The Common Room by making a direct donation: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/best-little-bar-in-the-bay

“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in their thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper.” The Firefly Column, USA

Courtney Barnett announces she will be undertaking a solo tour around Aotearoa this July, in her first live shows in over 12 months.

Having been grounded in 2020 care of the global pandemic, Barnett made the best of a bad situation and wrote and recorded a new record. That drops later this year, but before it does the maestro is touring her solo show to all corners of Aotearoa–a country she’s adored touring in the past and a place she considers herself lucky to have the opportunity to return to. With nine dates at some of New Zealand’s favourite venues, local audiences are in for a treat as Barnett dials things right down and prepares to deliver gems from her catalogue in an intimate setting.

After years of touring with her thunderous band around the globe, the performer recently found herself craving the simplicity of her early days as a straight up singer-songwriter. Armed with just a guitar, her renowned banter and some of the best indie folk songs of the past decade, she toured North America throughout the pre-pandemic months of 2020 like she had never done before. Those shows saw Courtney at both her most raw and personal. She played town halls, barns, churches, dive bars, haunted hotels, ski-lodges, theatres and studios, all to enraptured audiences, who couldn’t quite believe they were watching the artist in this mode. For Courtney, the simplicity and honesty of performing solo was an inspirational salve; a way to fall back in love with the art and craft of song. This is the Courtney Barnett New Zealand gets to witness in July, on what will be anunmissable tour.

Kane Strang announces a seven-date tour of Aotearoa, in support of his new album Happy to Perform.

After playing to a packed out room of eager fans at Auckland’s Mermgrown festival on March 20, the countrywide tour will now see Kane and his band bring the album to life for fans in Aotearoa’s other main centres. The epic tour will see Kane performing with a stellar band comprised of Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels, Sulfate), Leith Towers (Marlin’s Dreaming), Mitchell Innes and Gussie Larkin (Mermaidens, Earth Tongue).

When speaking on the upcoming shows, Kane said he’s “really looking forward to bringing the new songs into a live setting, reworking some of the older stuff and also visiting some places I’ve never played before like Leigh, Hamilton and Napier.” He added that he’ll be “loaded up with merch and perhaps even have some kind of physical version of Happy to Perform”.

The phenomenal album was produced and engineered by Steven John Marr and recorded at Auckland’s legendary Roundhead Studios. The record also features esteemed local musicians Peter Ruddell, Jonty O’Connor (Zane 2000) and saxophonist Tim Copland. Happy to Perform comes in the wake of Kane’s first two records – both of which earned him international acclaim.

In just five short years the Dunedin-born artist has released three albums – Blue Cheese (Flying Nun/Ba Da Bing!, Two Hearts and No Brain (Dead Oceans) and now Happy to Perform. His meticulous work ethic when it comes to writing and record has been noted by fans, promoters and culture writers the world over, something that led to him being nominated for the Critics Choice Prize in 2016 and earning a place as a finalist for the prestigious Taite Music Prize in 2018.

Somewhere in between nationwide tours, writing and recording, Kane has also found time to tour Europe, the United States and Australia, and make appearances at major international festivals such as The Great Escape, Treefort Festival and the world’s premier industry festival, SXSW.

The Happy to Perform tour marks Kane’s first nationwide run of shows in more than two years, so demand will be high (you don’t want to sleep on this one!).

It’s been a year since Jeremy Redmore released his acclaimed comeback album The Brightest Flame. It was a release cut short by Covid’s varying symptoms, but the season is now right to take these cinematic songs and their embedded stories to audiences across Aotearoa.

Winter 2021 presents itself as the perfect scene for a set of songs that were conceived while Redmore was living in Toronto in the midst of snow-piled pavements, breathless cold and a collapse of the world as he knew it.

What emerged from that time was an album universally praised by critics for its emotive strength and sonic complexity and a surprising departure from his previous solo album and work as the writer and frontman for Midnight Youth.

Redmore’s writing here is as lucid as ever, and he hasn’t lost his ear for melody, but this is much more introspective slow-burn than stadium stomp,” Matt McAuley wrote for The Spinoff.

“The multi-tracked vocals and oscillating synths of early album standout ‘So Easy (II)’ recall the work of Canadian indie legends Wolf Parade, while the red-eyed balladry of songs like ‘Goodbye’ and ‘Southern Lights’ split the difference between early Bon Iver and late Walkmen to powerful effect.”

Redmore says fans can expect not only songs from The Brightest Flame, but also from his complete catalogue, including unheard interpretations of Midnight Youth hits. With the tour kicking off in June, Redmore will be joined by a full backing band and will announce some incredibly talented support acts very soon

After a prolonged Californian lockdown, Greg Johnson is over the moon to be returning home for his nationwide tour, Time Is A Traveller, which coincides with the release of his brand-new album, Tilt Your Interior.

For his first New Zealand tour since 2019, Greg Johnson joins forces with his legendary band Ben King, Wayne Bell and Mark Hughes. Special guest Dianne Swann will open the shows, celebrating the release of her new album The War On Peace of Mind.

“My quarantine is booked and I’m great at holing up in Hotel rooms so once they set me free, I’ll be rearing to go with my best line-up of songs and musicians since the end of the Gulf War.” Says Johnson.

“After a gloomy year of lockdown and seclusion in LA, and a deep aversion to Zoom concerts, real, interactive, cozy live shows feel more vital than ever, and I have many stories to tell. It’s an understatement to say I’m excited to be touring again and playing some of my favourite New Zealand towns and venues, as well as some I haven’t been to in more than twenty years.”

At the shows, Greg Johnson fans can look forward to thirty years of great hits including Isabelle, Don’t Wait Another Day, Liberty, Save Yourself, It’s Been So Long, Now the Sun is Out, Looking Out On Monday, I Got Opinions, Swagger and more.

Accolades include two Tui NZ Music Awards, eight top 20 albums and a coveted Silver Scroll, for Liberty.

Of his new album, Tilt Your Interior, Johnson says: “I have waited 5 years to make this record and despite the pandemic I’ve pulled together some amazing players from around the world, including my pals Ted Brown and Ben King. Technology made this album possible but some intense personal events the last few years have given the songs a little extra gravitas I think, and I am pretty thrilled how it sounds.

My box-set subscribers have been receiving advance singles from the new album, and their feedback and support has been really inspiring. Once again I have my loyal fanbase to thank for these times and hopefully I’m rewarding them with some nice tunes.” Press Release: Embargoed until Wednesday 7 April, 7.30am NZ

Exploring semi-sarcastic topics of heartbreak, ambition and shattering dreams – Candice Milner’s ‘Depressional Season’ is being released this June. Featuring singles ‘Kyeburn Claims’ and ‘Watercooler Gossip’, this album is being performed live at Blue Smoke in Christchurch alongside Milner’s band just in time for winter.

Candice Milner is a local indie-folk songwriter hailing from the port town of Lyttelton, she released ‘Evergreen’ at the age of 18. This gained Candice a spot as a finalist for the Tui ‘Best Folk Artist of 2018’, after her national tour of New Zealand.

Since the debut album, Candice has taken her guitar, angelic melodies and raw lyrics all over the world, sharing her organic gothic folk sound. Candice’s North America tour commenced in 2018, and has since been working on her highly anticipated sophomore album.

“She showcases a strong range of sound and emotion, with some songs sombre and simple, reminiscent of Tiny Ruins and others more like Bannerman with fuller arrangements and bigger, catchier choruses”. – NZ Musician Magazine

“Frequently evoking the thread of spiritual and romantic Anglofolk, Milner’s spare acoustic melodies are enhanced by striking arrangements for strings and a “choir” of backing vocalists with her confident and clear voice at the centre of the frame.” – Elsewhere.co.nz

BEASTWARS – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TOUR

Doors Open: 8:30 pm – Show Time: 9:30 pm

Wellington sludge metal titans Beastwars are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their iconic debut self-titled album with a nationwide tour headlining the largest venues of their career.

The brutal and barbaric debut long player firmly established Beastwars’ reputation as one of New Zealand’s most powerful and uncompromising groups. Alongside critical acclaim both here at home and internationally it also earned them nominations at the Taite awards and the NZ Music Awards for Best Rock Album winning Best Album Artwork for the spectacular mind melting imagery by Nick Keller.

Coinciding with the tour and to mark the anniversary, Destroy Records in association with Universal Music will repress the long out of print album on vinyl for the first time in 7 years. With collectors paying up to $300 for copies of the rare original pressing this will be welcome news to those who missed out the first time. The freshly remastered vinyl finds the band’s heavy apocalyptic howls eerily soundtracking the events of today just as well as they did a decade ago. And as a special bonus, 2 songs that did not fit onto the album have been re-recorded at Roundhead Studios and The Surgery and will be released on a limited run 7″ vinyl single.

Wellington heavy psych duo Earth Tongue will open all shows with their explosive fuzz-laden stoner pop. Prepare yourself for mind-frying riff action.

Both Earth Tongue and Beastwars were due to spend 2020 touring Europe so here is a chance to see two world class riff worshippers on the same stage.

MONTY BEVINS – ‘CATALINA’ SINGLE RELEASE TOUR

Doors Open: 7:00 pm – Show Time: 8:00pm

Following on from the 7 years of constant touring that fuelled the EP ‘Traveller”, Monty’s first 2 years as a father have defied him to delve deeply into what slowing down might uncover. The single “Catalina” gives us an intimate insight into this world, via the imaginary lens of whoever owned that abandoned trailer sailer down the road… There had to be a song in it!

Embracing change, reinventing life, and connecting to the source are themes that drive Monty’s full-length debut album, out this spring.

Monty Bevins is a New Zealand based singer-songwriter, known as a touching, spirited performer, whose soul-folk songs ask the big questions while telling the small stories. With a warm rich voice articulate guitar grooves, Monty digs out and distills themes of tenderness, personal revolution and adventure.

TEAM DYNAMITE – RESPECT THE PROCESS ALBUM TOUR

Doors Open: 8:00 pm – Show Time: 9:00 pm

Team Dynamite are thrilled to announce their first tour in over six years, in support of their sold out top five album ‘Respect The Process’.

The band will be celebrating the release with a six date tour around New Zealand, including shows in Gisborne, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and finishing in Auckland.

Respect the Process features a stellar cast of special guests, including soulstress Bailey Wiley, ‘Prince of Grey Lynn’ Diggy Dupe and singer/songwriter Louis Baker. A short documentary has been produced by Tom Scott, who released the album via his label, Years Gone By.

This album captures our bounce back from adversity. It is the result of us working through the hard times together and using music as our group therapist says Lucky Lance.

Haz Beats, Producer and band-member explains the raw emotion of creating the new album. I had to turn the music up to drown out what the world was saying about us at one stage. Every song was a chance to reset the wrongs and let those feelings bleed through our music.

Team Dynamite formed in the late 2000s after aspiring teenage MCs Lucky Lance and Tony Teez decided to take hip hop beyond their weekend freestyle sessions at a local park. An introduction to producer Haz Beats provided the beats they were missing, and suddenly Team Dynamite was a legitimate group, building a reputation for dance-floor friendly hip hop and becoming mainstays of the Young Gifted & Broke collective.

The group released The Demo Tape in 2010, Shepherds Delight in 2014 and Never Again EP in 2015. They’ve collaborated with a who’s who of New Zealand music including Che Fu, @peace, Laughton Kora and Bailey Wiley. Their high energy live show saw the group play major festivals including Homegrown and Rhythm & Vines. They opened for international acts Methodman and Redman and supported local acts such as Fat Freddy’s Drop and Ladi6.

Team Dynamite has been quiet for the last few years, save for a few singles to keep fans intrigued. They’ve focused on other projects – music and otherwise. Tony is a youth worker, Lance has a clothing brand and Haz continues to make beats and produce music, notably for Avantdale Bowling Club and Miloux, as well as touring with the re-formed Home Brew.

THE CHILLS – SCATTERBRAIN ALBUM TOUR

Doors Open: 8:30 pm – Show Time: 9:00 pm

Dunedin’s finest, The Chills release their seventh studio album ‘Scatterbrain’, a glorious self- examination of Martin Phillipps’ songwriting hot (ish) on the heels of the hugely successful ‘Snow Bound’ (2018) and the critically-acclaimed movie ‘The Chills: The Triumph And Tragedy Of Martin Phillipps’ a year later. As the rave reviewed movie premiered at the SXSW film festival, The Chills headed out on their first US tour since ’96 to further accolades whilst revisiting those esoteric extremes so wonderfully collected in the film which then simultaneously premiered around the world.
“It’s about artistic integrity, self- realisation, self-acceptance and a reflection on mortality.” The Guardian

Now in 2021, Phillipps is taking stock of things – everything. Yes, everything. The result is this triumphant new Chills’ album ‘Scatterbrain’, a thought- provoking and evocative stock take from a man who has lived through good times and bad. But now, the world is a different place and optimism is in short supply. Viewed from the perspective of a man understanding his age and indeed his own mortality, ‘Scatterbrain’ is underpinned, as ever, with catchy melodies and an incisive turn of phrase; it takes a mature look at matters arising with a side order of perspective as opening cut ‘Monolith’ displays.

‘Scatterbrain’ is a life passing before your ears as uncertainty increases and fake news rumbles on; during which aliens invade, Phillipps scales the walls beyond abandon as he probes the minutiae of worlds within worlds and the hourglass fills. A landmark album from one of the great modern song writers, it’s pure pop music for the new normal and we can’t wait to see how it ends…

ADAM HATTAWAY & THE HAUNTERS / DANIEL ARMSTRONG & THE MONSOONS

Doors Open: 8:00 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

Following a fuzz-ladened debut album ‘All Dat Love’, A.H.’s second album ‘Crying Lessons’, (produced by the acclaimed Delaney Davidson) stripped back the noise to focus on their rock’n’roll roots. With their third album, ‘WOOLSTON, TEXAS’, the band have found their sound.

With Hattaway’s songwriting following a more organic process, it channels all of the raw emotion that defines their live shows. Due for release March 26th, ‘Woolston, Texas’ is a heartfelt lament to highs gone by. A reminder for those times when spectres creep out of the darkness and try to grab you – there’s more than one way out.

Exactly, where is Woolston, Texas?

CHELSEA JADE – NZ TOUR

Doors Open: 8:30pm – Show Time: 9:00pm

Chelsea Jade is escaping the US and making the arduous and isolated journey home, all so she can perform live for us once again. It’s possible she has other reasons to come to Aotearoa, but most importantly she’s sharing her incredible songwriting talents with the country for seven shows this February / March, with special guest rising Tāmaki artist deryk (who launched her debut EP Womb in 2020), including appearances at the Big Gay Out, the Auckland Arts Festival, and the Hamilton Gardens Festival.

Since her debut album Personal Best melted all our faces off in 2018, Chelsea Jade’s kept busy touring, writing and recording new songs between here and LA. Then, just as my last skin graft finally healed, she dropped new track ‘Superfan’ amid lockdown chaos and my face melted right off again. Here’s hoping the holy trinity (flights, a hotel, a negative Covid test) aline for the pop gem and she makes it home. Chelsea Jade kindly penned fans a letter to about the forthcoming trip back home, in which she revealed there’s a new record on the way (!)…

“Dear All, These announcement broadcasts usually take a familiar shape on my end – in an nth hour harried state, I comb through my last and oft-neglected bio screed and recalibrate it as if I’m a deeply impressed (!) third party narrator. While I understand the utility, I have to be honest, it never feels quite right!

So, little theatrics aside, I spent the lion’s share of 2020 in my Los Angeles apartment hunkering down ad infinitum. All tours canceled, everything in flux. I’m sure you’ve seen the news. Still, golden moments showed up in little ways. Getting lovely notes from Bandcamp Friday patrons, cleaning my apartment to that incredible Jessie Ware record and frankly, being invited to play in my hometown this year. I’m grateful to have made it through. It’s an immense privilege to be in a space where music can exist as viscerally as it was intended to be and I would be deeply honored if you would join me for these shows.

Your emotional wreck forever, Chelsea Jade

P.s – I guess I almost finished a new record too.”

JED PARSONS & HIS FRIENDS – 2020 YOU’RE FIRED

FACEBOOK EVENT

Blue Smoke Open 7:00pm – Show Time: 8:00pm

To celebrate the imminent death of 2020, Jed Parsons is bringing the largest version of his band together for their final show of this pooey year. Parsons and his band will be joined by GOODWILL (fresh off his extensive nationwide tour with Dave Dobbyn) and The Knews – a reunion of sorts, with both acts featuring all the ex-members of the chart-topping band ‘nomad’. 2020 will have been given its two weeks notice. Let’s celebrate.

A couple of years on from the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Midnight Feast’ (IMNZ Debut Release of The Year finalist), and over 1.5 million streams down the track, indie-pop sensation Jed Parsons has settled into the dizzying heights of people saying “oh yeah, I think I’ve heard him before”. He’s not complacent, however. Having already graced the stages of Auckland City Limits, Electric Avenue, Nostalgia Festival and North West Festival in his short career, Parsons is trucking on, selling out shows on countless tours and releasing popular indie pop singles ‘Playstation & Porn’, ‘She’s The One’ and ‘Sad Together’ from his forthcoming sophomore album.

Parsons’ sound is a culmination of his rich and varied background as a touring musician, which has taken him around the world and into the studio with the likes of nomad, Pacific Heights and Mel Parsons and Hera. His music balances eccentricity and energy with intimacy and musical sensitivity, maintaining a focus on catchy hooks and lyrical prowess. “If you’re a fan of upbeat indie-pop, then you might already be aware of Kiwi muso Jed Parsons. But if not, he’s undoubtedly about to become one of your new favourite artists…” – Tone Deaf, Australia

ADAM MCGRATH & DARREN WATSON

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30pm – Show Time: 8:30pm

Dinner before the show? There is limited table seating available in view of the stage, bookings essential CLICK HERE TO MAKE A BOOKING

PLEASE BRING A TOY TO BE DONATED FOR XMAS ALONG WITH YOUR TICKET.

Two of NZ’s foremost roots singer songwriters, Adam McGrath and Darren Watson team up for a double release / toy raiser christmas cheer / whateverathon this December at Christchurch’s premier community music venue ‘Cassels Blue Smoke’.

Darren will be showcasing his new album ‘Getting Sober for the End of the World’ for the first time in ChCh and Adam will be releasing a new possibly pretentious book ‘The Dogs Are Up’.

Expect stories, songs and a socialism of the public bar.

Adam McGrath is a folk singer stationed wherever he lands. He travels the state highways and byways of New Zealand, Australia, Europe and parts beyond, slinging songs and offering up low rent barroom philosophy with his band of misfits and chancers, The Eastern. He hopes for the best, prepares for the worst and believes in Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, libraries, and singalongs. He lives alone, cooks infrequently and is scared of flags that blow to the right. He is happiest in front of a jukebox as the call for last drinks is given, because jukeboxes are getting harder to find, and the last drinks call means the lock in is ever closer. His songs have gathered more than their share of good reviews in NZ and overseas, he’s been nominated for a couple of serious music awards (including the Apra Silver Scroll), Graham Reid from the NZ herald called him ‘NZ’s toughest minded songwriter’ and Barry Saunders from The Warratahs simply described him as “The Truth” while Radio New Zealand refered to him as a “National Treasure”.

Music journalist Nick Bollinger recently described Darren Watson’s music with the phrase So few notes, so much music. Watson’s thirty five year journey from a busy, almost twitchy, fresh-faced front person for the popular late 80s rhythm and blues showband Chicago Smoke Shop to politically engaged folk-blues troubadour has been something to behold. Over the last decade in particular Watson has developed a uniquely Kiwi writing voice and a direction which has taken his music out of the bar room and into concert halls and festivals. Gone are the imported affectations and electric histrionics. Now then with a bold acoustic-based approach and a sweetly-maturing voice, Watson sings original songs that, while drenched in the blues, could only really come from Aotearoa.

A dreamy indie folk/rock/pop group from Christchurch, There’s A Tuesday consists of two female front women on guitars and vocals, Nat Hutton and Minnie Robberds, with Angus Murray on bass and Joel Becker on drums.

The band recently released new single ‘Amsterdam’, the lead single from their Dance With Me Before We Cry EP, the rest of which will be released on Friday November 27. Possessing sublime harmonies and gorgeous songs, There’s A Tuesday won 2019’s Smokefree Rockquest, which provided the platform to record debut single ‘Pinata Head’ at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios. The single rocketed to #13 on the New Zealand singles chart, received rave reviews and frequent radio play nationwide.

They’ve gone on to become the darlings of NZ’s festival circuit, landing upcoming spots at Rhythm & Alps and Rhythm & Vines, Le Currents, and Electric Ave, as well as playing support on The Butlers’ recent tour, and Mako Road’s upcoming shows in Auckland and Wellington.

Band member Nat Hutton says ““We are so excited to have our first nationwide headline tour playing our brand new EP to all you wonderful people, can’t wait to dance with you all!”

Cassels Blue Smoke will be open and offering a pre-show dinner service from 6.30pm, bookings are essential: CLICK HERE TO BOOK A TABLE

Endeared country music icons, The Warratahs return to Cassels Blue Smoke this November to lift our hearts and raise the roof.

From the Far North to The Bluff and all points in-between, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders have packed pubs, theatres, barns and dance halls and have literally grown up with The Warratahs.

The songs by lead singer and guitarist Barry Saunders are etched into New Zealand’s landscape and this artistry was rewarded in 2016 with The Warratahs taking out Best Country Music album at the Gore Gold Guitars Awards with Runaway Days, an album that entered both the NZ and Country charts in the Top Ten. Their more recent double album Drivin’ Wheel, is a unique collection of their songs and style since the band’s beginning in 1986. To date, a total of eight albums showcase the group and their poignant music. These are songs that paint a picture of New Zealand, from the nostalgia and majesty of the provinces and the cities, to the heartbreak of the Christchurch quake.

For 33 years the band has travelled to and played in 120 different urban centres and towns across the country. Over this period, a favourite travelling companion was poet Sam Hunt at many of the band’s shows. These days, founder member and master of the accordion Alan Norman, will often guest on-stage. The band has appeared with Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Billy Joel, Lucinda Williams and Leann Rimes, among other international stars. Don’t miss the chance to hear Nik Brown’s hands of fire on fiddle as The Warratahs play Hands of My Heart, Maureen, Rescue Me, St. Peter’s Rendezvous, Mount Victoria Rain, Taranaki and other classics by these titans of the backbeat and buccaneers of the road.

Bring your dancing shoes to their next live show and in the words of Elvis… if you can’t find a partner, use a wooden chair.

We have three amazing bands on the bill: Ryan Fisherman, Runaround Sue and of course Adam Hattaway & The Haunters. Also it’s Halloween and we’re giving away a bountiful bundle of merch to the best dressed, so get weird and we’ll see you there

***REPLACES SHOW SEPT 4TH***
Dave Dobbyn is welcoming New Zealanders’ freedom to come together in music by hosting a series of shows in September and October after the original tour was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Four news shows have also been added to the run – Te Kuiti, Rotorua and Taupo, together with a second Stratford show.
“My last performance was on Zoom for the Music Helps charity that provides assistance to all those behind the scenes who have lost work. Now I have the opportunity to open up our horizons again, to put the band and crew on the road and bond through real-life gatherings” said Dobbyn.
“We are keeping it intimate for this run but it still means a team of 11 on the road and we can’t wait to make connections and meet people. Loading in gear and packing out at the end of the night has never been more appealing for the production team!”
Dobbyn will perform some hidden gems from his catalogue alongside much-loved anthems, with his long-standing rhythm section of Jo Barus from Christchurch on bass and drummer Ross Burge from Auckland together with Taranaki guitarist Victoria Girling-Butcher.
Good Will, Christchurch musician Will McGillivray (in his first performances since the split of his band nomad) will be the support.

MARLIN’S DREAMING – QUOTIDIAN ALBUM RELEASE TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Seeking inspiration from a dank eerie flat in Dunedin, steeped in the city’s rich musical history, Marlin’s Dreaming erupted onto the local scene in late 2017 with their debut album, Lizard Tears. The national & international success of the tasty indie-pop EP helped them escape the flat in favour of the road, with consecutive sold out tours across the country.

As the years went on, Marlin’s Dreaming’s sound grew with it, their 2018 EP Talk On/Commic retaining the wry humour of Lizard Tears, but donning a darker aesthetic, with 90’s fangs evoking many of the post-punk greats. Last year they took it on the road with the likes of Kirin J Callinan, The Chills and Ocean Alley, as well as their own sold-out Australian tours.

The band released Quotidian in April 2020, amidst the global lockdown, an accidentally prescient album about the claustrophobia of feeling stuck; directionless. Musically, it was a shift into more serious songwriting, and an exploration of the genre that garnered wide-ranging critical praise from mastheads like NME, American Songwriter, Brooklyn Vegan, and Atwood Magazine.

Pigeon’s & Planes/COMPLEX: “Mixing bits of pieces of indie, psychedelic, and surf rock, Marlin’s Dreaming is making the kind of music that’s chilled-out and calming, while incorporating enough flashes of energy to keep you moving.”

The 405: “Marlins Dreaming’s ‘Cheeky Kids’ is the song you need on a Wednesday. There’s just enough escapism to give you that Friday feeling a little early, while still being grounded enough to keep you in line.”

IMPOSE Mag: “It’s music that you’d want to hear while making some of the best memories in your life. It’s a song full of independence and a motivator for you to get out and explore the beautiful earth on a sunny day.”

Blue Smoke will be open and offering a pre-show dinner service from 6.30pm, the show will begin at 8:30pm.

legendary kiwi country singer Al Hunter and Eastern frontman and solo folkie, Adam McGrath join forces for an intimate show at Cassels Blue Smoke this August.

In the world of now, it’s like if you don’t get a photo of it it didn’t happen, if it didn’t arrive on instagram then it was never anywhere, especially if your out there making music. Luckily that’s just how it appears, the world ticks along regardless. And so it is with the odd music maker, still out there still rambling, making it up as they go along finding themselves in the middle of the magic in the magicist of places.

Earlier this year, just before the world tilted on its axis, Eastern frontman and solo folkie in his own right Adam McGrath found himself deposited in the small town of Woodstock just inland from Hokitika. Weirdly enough the great Texan songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore was also there, in another turn of the serendipitous wheel, the legendary kiwi country singer Al Hunter was also in the house playing with his son and members of the legendary west coast Hethrington family. McGrath was stoked, a bunch of heroes in one room and a bar tab. Everything was going to be ok. And it was all night and all song after song long.

The night was sky splittingly magic. In typical west coast fashion, locals made bones about nothing more than whether the songs were drinkable too and danceable for. They indeed were.
In the middle of it probably embarrassing himself during a harmonica break, McGrath allowed himself a little tear and was like Goodgoddamn Jimmie Dale Gilmour and Al fuckin Hunter!.

Feeling the deep pull of Hunters true, honest, good willed songs he knew he needed to bring him over to his side of the island and use whatever power he could to drum up some paying song appreciators to let Hunter know that even though it might’ve been a while between drinks, that his songs and history were still important.

Being the Award winner, country gentle/workingman and 3 chord legend Hunter is McGrath reckons it’ll be an honor to host the man on stage at the Cassels Blue Smoke in Woolston. The two of them will be performing in a traditional country song swap in the round arrangement. The usual Blue Smoke conviviality and music loving spirit will be in the house and night of Song and heart should warm the feet, heads and cockles of all in attendance!

KIWI VOCAL POWERHOUSE, JODY DIREEN, RELEASES EPIC NEW ALBUM ‘SMOKIN’ ASHES’

Direen is one of Australasia’s most vibrant country pop artists and is set to celebrate the launch of her new album “Smokin’ Ashes” with her full band, fans and friends on July 25 at Cassels Blue Smoke venue in Christchurch with special guests Assembly Required, Cam Scott and Phil Doublet.

For the past 4 years – since her signing with Australian record label’s ABC Music and Universal Music, Jody Direen has been in a whirlwind, clocking up miles on the ground and across the skies touring both New Zealand and Australia.

The Vodafone NZMA Tui winner for “Best Country Album – Shake Up” states that people can expect an uplifting show and that she’ll be performing new songs, old songs and some covers. “It’s been a weird few months and I’d love people to join me and celebrate, dance, let our hair down and our worries go – music is good for that”. Two singles from the new album have already been released including ‘All Nighter’ and ‘My Fire’. Direen says that creating this album took her on a journey she wasn’t expecting.

“Whilst writing and recording this album I went through a period of personally ‘letting go’ of anything that no longer serves me (people, beliefs, thoughts, things). This inspired the album title ‘Smokin’ Ashes’ resembling dying to the past, emerging into a new-me, new love but it also encapsulates a double meaning of ‘the end of things’; in one way or another these elements connect to each of the ten songs on the album”.

Performing some of Australasia’s biggest festivals continue to hold as career highlights for the songstress including supporting Kenny Rogers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and LeAnn Rimes. Touring Australia’s first ever C2C Festival last year alongside international greats; Tim McGraw, Kelsea Ballerini, Blanco Brown and more was a ‘dreamy experience’.

With multiple hits, stages, nominations and awards under her belt, Direen is set to venture into an explosive new phase of her career with new-found energy within herself and her songs.

“I’ve never been so excited for a new release and live shows is mostly how I’d love people to experience the new songs. I’m really looking forward to hitting the stage again especially after being in hibernation for a while due to Covid”.

HELMET 30th ANNIVERSARY TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 8:00 pm

Seminal New York City rock band Helmet is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a headline tour, which will take them around the globe, including three shows in New Zealand next year.

To mark 30 years in the game, Helmet will perform a 30-song set each night of the tour. The band will be playing songs from across their catalogue of eight critically-acclaimed studio albums, as well as rarities from older EPs and singles – with the possibility of a few covers mixed in for good measure. There will be no opening acts on any of the shows.

Founder and frontman Page Hamilton reflects on the occasion: “The day John, Peter and I auditioned Henry is the day I consider to be the beginning of Helmet. The year was 1989 and I think the month was May. I love playing this music more than ever with my current bandmates, Kyle, Dan and Dave. To celebrate 30 years of recording and touring we decided to play 30 songs a night… We hope to see you all there.”

Your friendly neighbourhood brass band”
– HPB

Hot Potato Band is a brass band like no other. Beginning as street performers the 10 piece band from Sydney Australia are passionate about re-igniting organic performance and acoustic instrumentation, breaking down the barriers between stage and audience, and writing engaging original music that leaves lasting impressions on audiences around the world. Their shows are filled with dancing and laughter and is an all round guaranteed good night out.

They are incredibly proud of their all acoustic line up. An energetic amalgamation of catchy music, lyrics, infectious dance moves, interaction and the breaking down of barriers between stage and audience is what sets Hot Potato Band apart. Although difficult to describe their genre, HPB continues to compile their arsenal of songs inspired by Pop, Funk, Ska and Reggae, binding them by the classic instrumentation of New Orleans brass bands.

The bands unique sound is built on the backs of three drummers and a sousaphone, along with an array of horns covering catchy chorus lines and providing a beautiful harmonic cloud for Ben (vocalist) to float above. They are a band never to shy from a good time.

“Hot Potato Band were undoubtedly one of the most entertaining acts of the day”
– Madeline Tait, THE MUSIC (Lost Picnic Festival, Sydney)

“Simply amazing in every single way, from their timing, their show performance, to their impressive crowd involvement. They
gave the Lost Picnic audience a performance so unique and entertaining, personally their set was definitely one of the
highlights from the entire event”
– Laura Tedder, AMNPLIFY (Lost Picnic, Sydney)

“Of course there are always some gems of acts that you see that make the entry price totally worth it. My picks for this year
were Sydney boys Hot Potato Band who i saw twice.”
– Kristen Austin-Zande, SCENSTR (Queenscliff Music Festival)

“This band simply is a barrel of fun and a perfect fit for a summer’s night of revelry.”
– Philippe Perez, The AU Review

We are proud to support this incredible fundraiser for Lachie alongside Cassels Brewing Co and The Tannery. Lachie was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2012 as a 4 year old and underwent chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, stem cell transplant, immunotherapy and self-funded MIBG therapy. Six years post treatment, Lachie’s family were devastated to learn he had relapsed in August last year and needs to travel to Sydney for MIBG treatment once again. Help us raise money towards the $80k required!

Join us at Cassels Blue Smoke on March 14th for an evening of comedy, auctions, raffles and music as we raise funds for Lachie’s MIBG treatment in Sydney. Ticket sales and auction proceeds go directly towards Lachie’s MIBG treatment in Sydney.

NADIA REID – OUT OF MY PROVINCE TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

No one ever got anywhere by standing still. As an artist, you must move to grow. It’s a sentiment Nadia Reid knows well. Leaving her beloved New Zealand for America to record her third album with strangers, what she didn’t expect was a family awaiting her; teaming up with Spacebomb, her evocative travel tales push explorations of love, personal growth and deep reflection beyond boundaries she ever thought possible.

“Out of My Province is definitely a travelling album; they are road songs,” tells Nadia, of the album, written during a period of intensive touring following the release of her critically acclaimed LP, Preservation. “I felt inspired while I was moving and playing most nights. Sometimes good. Sometimes hard – there was this term I came up with called ‘digging for gold’ where some nights, you’d need to dig deeper for that feeling. During that time I felt really alive and useful.”

Therein is what marks Nadia Reid as more than a wandering troubadour. For her, making music is necessity and through it, she has found her place in the world. As doctors save lives, true artists contemplate their purpose on earth and like sending a postcard to her hometown of Port Chalmers, Out of My Province further marks Nadia’s wildly expanding trajectory, this time from outside her comfort zone; her dynamite vocal soothing souls to offer her own kind of healing. “As an artist, progression is key. I want to always be changing, pushing boundaries, to feel growth. It’s good for us,” she says. “For me, places are about people. If I connect with a person, I’ll remember that, more than an historic building or view. It’s my reason for doing this.”

Between European tours, appearing on Later…with Jools Holland and singing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Out of My Province is the sound of a young artist growing in profile and dexterity before international audiences and whose world has changed before her eyes. “I took myself to the Amalfi Coast in Italy for two weeks. To get really alone. And to write. That’s where I wrote ‘The Other Side Of The Wheel.’ That experience bled into a lot of future writing.”

MY BABY – LIVE! NZ TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

Amsterdam-based Dutch-NZ trio MY BABY have announced a 10-date New Zealand tour to celebrate the release of their new live album out now.

With a formidable reputation as a live act, MY BABY’s roots-driven hypnotic dance music has taken the world by storm. The MY BABY Live! New Zealand Summer Tour kicks off in Raglan at the YOT Club on February 6 and winds up at the Wildfoods Festival in Hokitika on March 7.

MY BABY’s sound is informed by gospel and blues with ancient folk melodies. Added to that is the rawness of 70s funk, African desert blues, Moroccan gnawa, Indian raga and a touch of EDM. It’s all live instrumentation without a computer or sample in sight!

The band has been spreading their psychedelic blues-trance rave to the approval of audiences worldwide since 2012. They’ve played at some of the world’s biggest festivals, including Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, Sziget, Fusion and Exit.

Over the years MY BABY has had tons of requests to capture the magic of their live show, which they’ve now delivered in the form of the album LIVE!

Relax in the idyllic setting of Orton Bradley Park and enjoy the best of Banks Peninsula; food, wines, beers, local produce, cooking demonstrations, crafts and of course local music.

Some more about the musicians …

LINDON PUFFIN

Lyttelton-based folk-punk musician and former frontman of 90’s glam-rock group The Puffins will be our official MC for the day!

Lindon Puffin has released a handful of albums, toured NZ heaps, played overseas a bit, supported some famous bands, had an album blip momentarily in the top 10, produced a tragicomedy music doco called Figure 8000, fronted a bit of telly, restored a boat, built a house, had some kids and refers to himself as a fisherman trapped in a musicians body.

He promises to regale us with entertaining banter and plenty of great songs.

AMIRIA GRENELL

Daughter of legendary Country musician John Grenell, Amiria grew up on a farm in Whitecliffs, Canterbury where her family hosted decades of music festivals in the back paddocks. She has followed her heritage into a colourful and long standing career as a touring artist and respected songwriter and now calls the Banks Peninsula home.

Her crystalline voice finely balances between gentle restraint and emotive strength, with instrumentation that is equally impressive.

Winner of a Tui NZ Music Award for her album ‘Three Feathers’ & a finalist for the same award for her album ‘Autumn’, this songwriter is gearing up to record a whole new set of songs in 2020.

Her style is New Folk, a bit of pop, country and soul. Her songwriting is honest, delicate and filled with a love of nature and adventures.

ADAM MCGRATH (THE EASTERN, SOLO)

Adam McGrath is a folk singer stationed wherever he lands. He travels the state highways and byways of New Zealand, Australia, Europe and parts beyond, slinging songs and offering up low rent barroom philosophy with his band of misfits and chancers, The Eastern.

Described as “two parts Woody Guthrie, one part revival meeting and one part group hug” a McGrath show goes straight for the spirit level in all of us. Looking deep for the heart and hoping to reach the thinking part of the brain all the while strumming his three chords like his life depended on it. Which of course it does, as of course it should.

“NZ’s toughest minded songwriter” -Graeme Reid

“One of the best modern roots artists, from any country” – No Depression magazine

“A national treasure” -Radio NZ National

CANDICE MILNER (DUO)

Candice Milner is from the seemingly sleepy hollow that is the port town of Lyttelton. She released her debut album ‘Evergreen’ with Lyttelton Records and Southbound Distribution, and is currently showcasing her newer songs in anticipation of her sophomore album.

‘Evergreen’ landed Candice a spot as a finalist for the Tui ‘Best Folk Artist of 2018’, after her national tour. Having played in Canada and the States, Candice has taken her guitar, angelic melodies and raw lyrics all over the world, sharing her organic gothic folk sound.

“She showcases a strong range of sound and emotion, with some songs sombre and simple, reminiscent of Tiny Ruins and others more like Bannerman with fuller arrangements and bigger, catchier choruses.” – NZ Musician Magazine

ADAM HATTAWAY & THE HAUNTERS (DUO)

One dark night, under the glow of a gas heater, Adam Hattaway and the Haunters emerged with a soul music anthology in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other. They’ll take you back to the good old days, circa. 1965, when a man could simply fall in love and cry about it.

Based in Lyttelton, Adam Hattaway and the Haunters have been building a national reputation as an electrifying live act. With sweltering hooks and starry-eyed narrative, their sound says ‘put your arm around the one you love and remember that they won’t be there forever – but maybe that’s a good thing.’

Adam Hattaway is for lovers. A born frontman, he will perform alongside fellow bandmate, Elmore Jones.

ESTHER SWIFT (SCOTLAND)

Esther Swift has travelled the world extensively with her music making and embraces many different influences in her virtuosic harp playing, composing and songwriting.

She writes songs about her homeland of Scotland, drawing on her folk roots and taking inspiration from nature and the people she meets along the way. An eclectic blend of jazz, folk, classical and everything in between Esther will share with you her stories and musical experiences from around the world.

TATTLETALE SAINTS – ALBUM RELEASE TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 7:30 pm

Summer 2020 sees Tattletale Saints return home to celebrate the release of their new album, Dancing Under the Dogwoods, out on January 24th.

Originally from Auckland, 2014 Tui Award winners Tattletale Saints now live in Music City USA, Nashville Tennessee. With the 2020 release of their third full-length album, vocalist/guitarist Cy Winstanley and vocalist/bassist Vanessa McGowan celebrate choosing a tough path and conquering seemingly insurmountable obstacles to chase a dream. With thoughtful and minimal production, their third release showcases the duos perfectly intertwined harmony vocals and Winstanley’s clever yet emotional songwriting. Their musicianship, while always masterful, feels relaxed on this offering, as though they no longer have to prove themselves. It is clear that Winstanley and McGowan have spent years working towards the creation of music that is organic, honest and effervescent, and with Dancing Under the Dogwoods, Tattletale Saints truly are here at last.

In their music and in their lives, Tattletale Saints don’t bow to societal pressure. One of the album’s standout tracks, “D.I.N.K.” highlights the joys of being child free. “Double income/no kiddies/living downtown close to the city/doing what we want/happy as a clam/money in our pockets/time on our hands” the duo sings. The song feels so good that one wonders why anyone would ever want to have a family. The pair seek the same care-free feeling in their music, “Neither of us are trying to force the songs into any one genre,” says McGowan of the albums’ 10 tracks, which move from country and cajun influences to jazz and folk-rock with ease, and include a melancholy reimagining of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”.

SHAG ROCK – SUMMER NZ TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 7:30 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

One step closer to another heaving tour, you don’t want to miss out on sunbleached Australian outfit Shag Rock, as they return to New Zealand to kick start 2020 with a bang!

The indie surf-pop 4-piece have plenty to smile about, fresh off the steam train after touring throughout regional Australia with The Rubens, making waves in New Zealand on their ‘Bridge the Ditch’ tour and selling out dates across Australia. Amassing over 15 million streams internationally and constantly growing their shaggy family of fans – 2019 hasn’t dimmed the spotlight either.

Since the release of their debut full length album ‘Barefoot’ (2017), Shag Rock have toured the USA and embarked on multiple headline tours across sunny Australia, clocking up the miles in the band van. Following this success, they have released two singles ‘Double Life’ and ‘Fuzzy Connection’ which have evolved into full-blown party anthems. Whether they’re sung in sold out shows, or steamy pre-work showers across the world; there is always a time for some Shag.

The band that makes you scream out loud for Champagne (or rather another round of beers) are ready to return to the land of the long white cloud and turn every show into a pulsing party. With new tunes but the same old buffoons – you can’t help but get excited for a new wave of Shag Rock.

ADAM MCGRATH, THE EASTERN SOLO

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

His songs have gathered more than their share of good reviews in NZ and overseas, he’s been nominated for a couple of serious music awards (including the Apra Silver Scroll), Graham Reid from the NZ herald called him ‘NZ’s toughest minded songwriter’ and Barry Saunders from The Warratahs simply described him as “The Truth” while Radio New Zealand referred to him as a “National Treasure”.

With The Eastern and solo he has shared stages with and opened for Fleetwood Mac, Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, Rodriguez, Damien Dempsey, Jim White, Justin Townes Earle, Willie Watson, Hayes Carll and many more. But he takes the most pride in getting up and putting it down, in both small towns and big, and the joy of shaking hands and sharing beers with the folks met along the way.

His song ‘Hope and Wire’ became the inspiration for the tv3 drama series ‘Hope and Wire’ directed by Gaylene Preston, and he was noted for his community work during the Christchurch earthquake. Playing over 50 free shows for people in Christchurch as well as collating the succesful Harbour Union project which included local friends Marlon Williams, Delaney Davidson and Lindon Puffin among others.
The Eastern are renowned for their ferocious roof raising live shows and have gathered a reputation for being the country’s hardest working band playing up to and beyond 200 shows a year, every year. Their latest album ‘The Territory’ was described as one of the best albums of 2014 from any band in any country by No Depression magazine.

Although the gathering of such plaudits makes him blush behind his rapidly graying beard, McGrath is very thankful and hopes that in someway this might help him in continuing to pay his rent through his roundabout stories and admittedly pretty crappy guitar playing. A people’s player, he works his ass off for any audience he finds himself in front of. Through, yarns, ballads and barnstormers, he goes looking most nights of the year for that deep well of magic that threads through the humble folk song.

Sometimes joined by his hard driving and sympathetic rhythm section “The Roaring Days”, A McGrath show swings wild and raw, swelling your heart, moving your feet and going deep for your thinking muscle. Stories and songs and boundless energy, this a show to be moved by.

Every year, the bells chime, the treetops glisten, the reindeer hoof up and the hum of the humdrum year before gently falls away, oh and the goddamn Eastern do a christmas show.

What goes around comes around and The Eastern take it as a point pride that as the years tick and the clocks tock that they still remain upright 12 years after they decided to make their first stand. For the last few goes around they’ve used their local shows as an opportunity to pitch in and shore up local things that could use a collective shoulder, with money, food and solidarity they’ve been able to help here and there a little sometimes and a lot others. This christmas is no different, asking attendees to show up at the door with a child’s Christsmas present big or small, that can be donated to those who’s resources are stretched and could use a little good cheer.

Conceived and driven by the ever present Bernard Gruschow aka DJ St Bernard from Wellington we look forward to hosting our fourth tour of 2019 after the wild success of the first three. We will be pulling out all the stops to keep the dance floor moving and the music fresh. Our previous events have been amazingly fun, so why not come down and get into it so we can keep doing it with more and more outrageousness and extravagance!

MISS JUNE – BAD LUCK PARTY TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 7:30 pm – Show Time: 8:30 pm

Miss June are thrilled to announce a run of homecoming shows this December, finishing off their whirlwind year of touring just the way it began, in New Zealand.

Since releasing their debut album ‘Bad Luck Party’ in September, which the NY Times de-scribed as, “a nod back at a pantheon of powerful statements and sounds… calibrated for 2019 ears craving a clever, irresistible outlet,” the punk-rock four piece have been impressing audi-ences and gaining fans worldwide with their blistering, reckless sound and the unrivalled stage presence of Annabel Liddell, guitarist Jun Park, bass player Chris Marshall and drummer Tom Leggett.

Heading to Christchurch for their only show in the south Island this year, Miss June will then re-turn to Wellington’s San Fran Bath House where their sold-out album release party took place earlier this year, before continuing on to Tauranga. Treating their Auckland underage fans to an all ages show at the Tuning Fork, Miss June will then finish up with a show at Raglan’s infamous Yot Club.

Continuing to build their reputation for fierce, formidable and head-spinning live shows, this is your last chance to catch Miss June live this summer, and it’s one you definitely won’t want to miss.

JOE PUG – NZ TOUR

FACEBOOK EVENT

Doors Open: 6:30 pm – Show Time: 8:00 pm

“the listener is quickly reminded of the minimalist beauty that has painted the singer-songwriter’s career for more than a decade”
– No Depression

Joe Pug’s new record The Flood In Color is nearly four years in the making. But that betrays the fact that the making of the album was one of the most natural and rewarding processes of his career. Produced by Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids and engineered by Matt Ross-Spang, the album started with the goal of focusing on the simplicity of musicians playing together, live, in the same room. Recently relocating back to his childhood home in Prince Georges County, Maryland after many years spent in Chicago and Austin, Pug wanted to take a new approach. The partnership with Pattengale proved to be an irresistible opportunity to do just that.

“The past couple of albums haven’t always been the most enjoyable to record. The process can really bring on all sorts of pressures about what you should be doing and how you should be doing it, both internally and externally. Lots of ‘Songs need to be 3 and half minutes long’ and ‘You need something that will work on AAA radio’. And the end result is this strange gravity that just weighs you down.”

Pattengale, a fan of Pug’s music since the days of his 2010 EP Nation of Heat, was eager to try a back-to-basics approach.

“So Kenneth and I sort of had the idea to strip all that away. I was just going to write songs. And I was going to do it in a way that came naturally to me, and that I enjoyed. Get rid of all the external bullshit. Look….music isn’t my entire life. Sometimes I want to write songs. But other times I want to read books. I want to play with my kid. I want to cook. A couple years ago I started a podcast. So that’s sort of how I approached this one. I’ll write songs the way I write songs. And when Kenneth and I had a few that we felt good about, we got together and dialled them in a bit further and worked on arrangements. Almost as friends as much as anything. And when we got them to a place we were happy with, we went to Nashville and recorded them. But through the whole affair, there was really no timetable I imposed on it.”

In the studio, the relaxed mood continued. “In the past I’ve been guilty of being a bit too intoxicated with the process of recording, and it sometimes took away from the pure joy of making music. This time we didn’t spend weeks hold up in the studio obsessing over minute details. Kenneth put together an A+ group of musicians. And then we sat around a table, talked about the song for a bit, ran through it, and then pressed record. It was a revelation and all the credit in the world to Kenneth for recognizing how important that would be. As a musician, there are so many things that can get in the way of actually making music. What Kenneth did was to methodically strip those things away.”

In 2015 Pug also launched the aforementioned podcast, which has gone on to enjoy tremendous success. The Working Songwriter is a monthly hour-long conversation with some of today’s best songwriters. Recent guests have included Josh Ritter, Amanda Palmer, Steve Earle, Brandon Flowers, Craig Finn, Ian MacKaye, Shakey Graves, Anais Mitchell and John Paul White. While its audience has grown, it’s always been more of a labour of love for Pug. “I didn’t hear the podcast I wanted to listen to, so I went ahead and just created it. From the very beginning, I had a pretty clear vision of what I wanted it to be. From there it was just a matter of convincing anyone to be on it! This was 2015, so it was still pretty early days for podcasting, so you’d get a lot of confused replies. ‘Wait, you want to interview me for an HOUR???’ “It’s made me reach out to the small community of people that do this for a living and given me a real sense of community. It started out with lots of friends and colleagues that I already knew, but since then I’ve gotten the opportunity to talk to lots of artists I hadn’t met prior. And it has been this absolutely incredible avenue to learning more about artists across genres. And in the process also learning about these very subtle but undeniable common threads that we all share because of our line of work.”
